I have to cancel the dec surf camp as there has been a double booking for the cabins on the weekend dec 5-7th, (this happens with the owner of the cabins occasionally) so instead I have decided to run a Surfin' Social Day on Sunday 7th Dec at South Maroubra beach

I will be bringing down a heap of surfboards and wetsuits for any girls to
use for free, plus I'll be giving a few tips etc for the first timers come along, meet some new girls and do a bit surfing!!

Meet at the south end carpark at 11am
(near the south maroubra surf life saving club) 
Bring lunch & drinks plus yourself/friends
It's a surfin' social day with surfboard and wetsuit hire free

Spring is here, the sun is shining, along with much needed rain, and the year is almost another one in herstory/ history ….and so the journey moves along

 

REAL has seen a growth in numbers and more support in our community than has ever been. I am proud to say it has built up a reputation of respect and acceptance amongst our community and I thank those who have supported REAL in its continuous journey. The month of November heralds a new beginning to welcome a more community leadership based REAL.

 

Therefore I am happy to pass on REAL in happy and committed hands to its community, so from the next REAL meeting which is on the 27^th of November, my resignation will take effect.  Those who wish to become an active agent in the delivery of REAL are welcome. I wish you all a most wonderful journey in this world and will no doubt see many of you in my travels…

The final Spiegelhaus Cabaret for the year is on in two weeks

 

The stock market has crashed and its 1929 all over again which means the great old tradition of 1930's Weimar Cabaret is back in vogue.

 

Friday 31^st October Halloween. 8pm at the phoenix theatre Coniston

Joining Nero, Inga and Ramrod on stage are the sultry Frau Lella Dunst and Manfred on Piano plus we have spooky clowns, tumblers, stumblers opera and lots more naughtiness. Come and join us for a night of wild abandon, dress up dress down and help us get the theatre up and running by supporting our fundraiser's were so close and yet so far but we hope to be open next year. We have come so far in our first year with 2 films being shot at the theatre and grants coming through for a new lighting rig from Wollongong City Council, we are about to start renovations on the main theatre space.

 

 

Der Spooky Haus has only one show so book now as were already getting great feedback. This show is rated MA so no one under 15 please. Nibbles will be available as per usual from the bar including our now famous Phoenix Salsa and the $15 admission is still waved so entry is free but all donations to help us get the theatre open will be gratefully accepted. We know financial times are tough but when things look down the best advice is to throw nipples to the wind and have a blast while the stock brokers jump from the 20^th floor.

Hope you all hold this day in celebration of you and your friends and family and all our sisters of who we are in light of our sexuality.
 
Even though the label lesbian is somewhat cast as non kosher to some, I like to remind us all that without our label we would not be cited as who we are in society today and  hence  we would not have a day to celebrate our coming out! I don't know much about lesbian herstory but we are out and proud because of our sisters who proudly felt we are worth and the fact we are human beings first and foremost and that we should be treated as such, and our diversity apart from the heterosexual way of being is part of human nature.....well that's what I think anyway.....
 
 I am a woman, a mother, a friend, a daughter, a spyrit sister, a lesbian ..I am a human being....

REAL NEWS July 2008

Welcome to REAL News and hello to gorgeous winter.

REAL has been up and running now officially for 6 months and has been welcomed by many lesbians and organisations. It's been an avenue in support for "coming out" and also meeting other lesbians in the Illawarra and around, and of course it's also been a meeting opportunity for those of us who've enjoyed discussion, dinners and the like. It's been trial and error, so I've taken it on and am doing my best to have something for everyone.

Due to fulltime uni commitments in the next six months REAL Talk will only happen once a month and will continue to be @ ACON Community Space.
Inner talk out has been unsuccessful in terms of numbers, so has been cancelled and the choir bombed out! I'm happy to say though Pats writers/book group is a success and REAL talk is alive and well and the dinners are rocking! Lesbian parents have asked for more family stuff and also to be included in dinners so every second dinner will be a family dinner.

 
International Lesbian Day in October is going to be celebrated big time with a dance being organised jointly with REAL and LISA – Lesbians In the Shoalhaven Area. There's been talk between women about lesbian health so LISA and REAL came up with a Mind, Body, Spirit and Coming out, I'll be able to let you know more soon.

REAL help for lesbians, volunteers have been hard at work providing a few women with help. If you want to put your hand up for any volunteer stuff please do.

REAL donated $200 to Mignon to help her with her up and coming CD that she is cutting as I write. REAL wishes Mignon the warmest best of wishes. Way to go Mignon!

I don't go to all REAL happenings, so it would be best for those who are going to a dinner or a REAL picnic etc to call my number or the number supplied or email me to check if others are going. All dates are subject to change if anything unforeseen happens. If anyone can put your name up for responsibility to call for any future events that would be very welcomed and appreciated.

REAL News April 2008

Welcome, to the 2nd REAL NEWS

A reminder to all that REAL is alive and happening for lesbian’s to unite and be supported in and amongst our community.

Currently there is no lesbian outlet of such in the Illawarra that supports lesbians in the way that REAL does.
REAL – Respecting Equality Amongst Lesbians can be described as a lesbian group who supports our being. Our meetings can also be described in some respects as “moments of affirmation “ and “lesbian business”. Where our meetings are lesbian only we do however encourage our friends and family and those who support us, who ever they to unite in some of our activities and events.

I’d like to encourage you all to support your lesbian community and contribute any way you can to make REAL be of benefit to us. This could be by volunteering at events we organise or being present to engage in any activity we have going or volunteering your skills. REAL cannot survive without participation from our community.
Having said this we have many lesbians in our community who are skilled and who are willing to empower our community with the skills they are willing to pass on to us. If this sounds like you please come forward and support REAL lesbians by sharing your skills and knowledge.

If anyone has a story they’d like to contribute to REAL NEWS send it via email or in writing to REAL.

REAL MEETINGS
The REAL meetings are up for discussion on topics you want to talk about. Respecting one another’s opinions is essential to healthy discussion. At these informal meetings it can be noted that who ever is present are the basis for decision making for what comes up for the group. Therefore I encourage whoever wants a say in REAL to come to these meetings.

Of course if you don’t wish to participate in these discussions you are welcome to break away and form conversations between others.

Remember the meetings are informal and don’t require action of being other than just being. Relax have a cuppa and a biscuit and just be.

Just to acknowledge that ACON have been providing afternoon tea for us and it is very much appreciated, Thank you to Alex/Lexi who makes an effort that we adore.

SURVEYS
Plenty of lesbian activities have been created as a result of approx 30 surveys that have been sent back. Thankyou for the feedback. There are many surveys that haven’t reached their way back to REAL, as your thoughts and suggestions are important, I urge you to send or hand in the survey to ACON, addressed to REAL so REAL can access the needs and the wants of our lesbian community effectively.

DONATION
I’m happy to share in the excitement of a financial donation of $1,000 by an anonymous lesbian to REAL.
As we know its hard work raising funds to help with on going expenses for some activities and events, so $1000 is much welcomed. A gracious thank you from REAL in supporting our lesbian community.

REAL LIBRARY
One area REAL has talked about is to obtain books for a REAL lesbian library. As we purchase books they will be available to borrow. If you have a preference of interest for any suggestions for books please let me know. ACON has a large selection of books also if you want to go in and have a look, they are available to borrow also.

An anonymous lesbian has graciously donated some lesbian books to our library and so far there we have accumulated about 40 books. These books will be available at the REAL fortnightly meeting. Thankyou for the books, they are a great start to our library.

MARDI GRAS
REAL marched under a REAL banner supported by ACON at Mardi Gras. Thankyou to the women who supported REAL in the parade and those who supported us outside the parade.

WRITERS/BOOK DISCUSSION
This group is facilitated by Pat who has organised and facilitated many different groups. This group has limited numbers, so to get a place you need to call Pat on 0431754694.

INNER TALK OUT
This takes us to the core of our being without discounting any experience of life. We all have a life experience either in action or in the past where clarity is either in motion or got lost along the way. This group focuses on talking about what it is that sets your spirit free or ways on how to overcome what it is that constricts your being from freedom of self. We share ideas and respect one another’s thoughts and suggestions of being. There is no right or wrong way to be about whatever situation or issues that you have to share, it is about gaining enlightenment about self and own circumstance. This is not a counselling group. I urge those who participate in this group to be mindful that what you share may evoke emotions and that those who are privy to this to be respectful and mindful that we are all human and we do these things. I am also bringing to the fore that this group remain confidential in respecting one another’s privacy to confidentiality.

REAL “Not just a Choir”
REAL is getting a “Not just a Choir” together so we can perform our creative talents to not just our lesbian community but to the general community. Our vocal instructor Pon will be teaching us how to use our voice , organise our music and inspire us. We also have a dance choreographer Robbi who will teach us some shimmy moves. If you know how to act and are prepared to pass these skills on to us, well we'd love to have you on board. Also if you know how to write comedy well we need you too! There are no set numbers for this Choir so if it interests you to sing or play an instrument, act or dance (you must already know how to play the musical instrument and provide it) come along and have some fun. How exciting! There will be a place for all who unite in our “Not just a Choir”

We will start our “Not just a Choir” journey on Sunday 11th of of May, 12pm – 2pm. Bring a plate of food and we can discuss where it's going. We will workshop every week until we have a gist of it and when we are more confident we can meet every two weeks.
Just to let you know that we will be having open performance for some workshops where we will be inviting members of our GLBTQ community and who ever to workshop with some of our perormances.

I went to a meeting that is promoting the up and coming PHOENIX Theatre @ Coniston (the old Coniston theatre), that Steen is getting back on track. We are able to perform here. More info about this at the meeting.

The Walala Wasala exhibition at Wollongong City Gallery just happened to be closed on the Saturday we went, so we went to the De Havilland Gallery, which has local artists, including paintings from local Aboriginal woman Lorraine Brown. Afterward we headed off to Belmore Basin for lunch and crossed over to visit the gallery there.

BREKKY’S –
REAL breakfasts were to begin this month, but it has come to our attention that a group of lesbians have been doing brekky on a weekly basis for quite some time now. Jacquie organises these brekkies so that there is one each weekend. They are at different café’s so it is best to call Jacquie to find out times and places. Jacquie: 0432 882 051

WORKING BEE INTEREST
Our lesbian community have women who find it difficult to perform certain handy woman jobs that some of us take for granted. If you are in need of assistance or can give assistance REAL would like to know. We could have a register of those needing help and those who can provide help.

Tania – I can volunteer 1 lawn mow per month and also do tree trimming and that sort of thing.

Jacquie has volunteered to up keep our REAL finances and to train anyone who wishes to learn this skill. A huge thank you.

Julia the JAM QUEEN is the proprietor of “THE JAM SHOP CAFE”, GLBTQ friendly. She invites us all to enjoy her warm and cosy atmosphere and of course her Jams. Julia has a range of wholesale jams and also caters for functions. The food looks just yummy and homemade. REAL are meeting up in May for Lunch, so check REAL calendar for more info. Of course if you feel like going there beforehand let us know how it is!

LISA IDEAS MEETING @ Nowra 5/4/2008

REAL went to a LISA (Lesbians In the Shoal Haven) meeting on the weekend and was privy to engaging with LISA about their vision for their Lesbian community. We were able to throw in a few ideas and gain some via a table of women who are passionate about uniting lesbian community. LISA and REAL have decided that as a joint event we will be putting on a dance to celebrate "International Lesbian Day" in October. This event has just begun to emerge and we encourage all volunteers and idea's to come forward. A date for discussion on this will be announced soon. We'll keep you posted!

Suggestions for a Lesbian "Mental, Physical, Spiritual and Emotional discussion &/or workshop are open for ideas. What is it that you'd like to engage in discussion with or workshop in? Up for talk already is a "Coming out discussion" which will form part of a series of ongoing discussions/workshops between the Nowra and Wollongong regions, that will include mental, physical, spiritual and emotional health.

Want to go in Mardi Gras?

Hi,

Do you want to go in the Mardi Gras parade this year? REAL will be marching with ACON and we would love you to join us.

We will all be meeting at the ACON office mid afternoon where we will join heaps of ACON supporters and marchers for a BBQ and drinks. We will move together from there to the marshalling area to get set for a BIG night.

Some of the REAL girls will be going along to the Dykes on Bikes Party at the Hampshire Hotel, 91 Paramatta Rd, Camperdown. It's free and open so feel free to join the party.

The day was excellent. We met up with old friends and made new ones.

Dinner @ Trangs

A rainy Thursday saw the REAL leso's gather for our monthly dinner. While the rain kept a few away, those who dragged there wet bodies to Trangs had a great night. The food was excellent and cheap, and the laughs were many.

After dinner we walked across town for an Ice Cream extravaganza at Cold Rock.

Just a tip, if you go there soon try the fresh lemon and lime (home made lemonade) absolutely brilliant.

Hello to all

It’s been exciting to be involved in lesbian activities and events again. Time is of an essence as we all can relate and the beginning of the year is just as busy a time as any time of the year so just a quick mail out to let you all know about what’s going on for this month.

REAL “news” and a calendar promoting events and activities up till June will follow shortly after this hasty mail out.

I hope you all can come along to one event or activity on the calendar this month and support our lesbian community unity.


“Lesbian Community goings on”


“Inner Talk Out” is a group who talk about what ever life moments you’d like to share about following your own life journey, past and present. We get together and support and respect each others opinions, we all have something to tell and/or share in the meaning of life. Natural and naturally planned places of beauty have been chosen to share in “Inner Talk Out”. In the event of much needed rain we can opt to go undercover outside if there is a space at that location or the ACON community space. This space is lesbian friendly and the community room is spacious with indigenous paintings surrounding the room.

“Lesbian Dinner” is on the first Thursday of the month, start 6pm. If you can’t get there at this time that’s ok as there will be some lezzo’s who will filter through at later times. I’d say though we will finish around the 8pm to 8.30 pm time slot.

On “Fair Day” Shannon from ACON says that they will have a shelter and we are welcome to share their space. So if any REAL lezzo’s would like to meet there we are welcome. We will have a REAL flag waving.

REAL meets @ ACON Community Space every second Thursday, 5.30pm – 7pm. you don’t have to be there at 5.30 as these meets are informal and are to meet up with other lesbian’s, have a chat and a cuppa. So any time between this time slot is ok.

There is an African Art exhibition called Walala Wasala – The Fabric of African Politics at the Wollongong City Gallery. This exhibition is open from 15th of February until the 4th of May 2008. If you would like to go as a REAL group on Saturday 23rd February, we will meet out the front of Wollongong City Gallery 12pm. I suggest we eat lunch before we go and afterward if we feel like a cuppa at a café afterward, we can do that also.

What a dinner!

Twelve wonderful women enjoyed dinner at Litanis in Wollongong on Thursday. It was a beautiful warm summers evening, the food was great the conversation fab. It was great to make new friends.
