Hi Zesters,

The Lemon Zest Book Reading/Discussion Group is looking for a couple more members, so if one of your new year's resolutions will be to read more, be more social, and enjoy discussing books with others then make sure you contact Margot at mmck00@optusnet.com.au to get involved.  The next meeting will be in February, so you will have time to find out all the details of their next book beforehand.

Also, I have attached the flier regarding the Lemon Zest Orphan's Christmas.  Make sure you book in for the details if you'd like to join some Zesters for this day.

Oh, and all the best for the festive season to you all!  Thanks for supporting Lemon Zest through its first year and I hope that you'll continue to do so.  Don't forget to put the date of our next dance in that calendar you'll get as a christmas present - Saturday, 27 March 2010.

Cheers

Tip of the week
by Alison Arcehelizaga

BREATHE... This is a wonderful exercise to help you relax either after a long day at work, before starting a new project or ideally at the beginning of meditation, why not have a go.

Breathe in deeply and let your stomach completely expand with the breath then hold the breath for the count of 4 seconds then release the breath, slowly and in a controlled way again to the count of 4 seconds, do this for 5 breaths at a time.

Did you know...

The Throat Chakra located at the base of the throat in the neck is the first chakra that connects us to the spiritual and is also the centre that helps us communicate with ourselves and the world around us, it helps us gain clarity and tap into our inner creativity and intuition.

Intuitive Healer - A course for self development
This is an exciting course for healers to develop their intuitive and creative healing potential.  It is a self-development course that will look at many different Shamanic, Intuitive and Psychic techniques used in many different healing practices around the world today.  Together with the rest of your group, your confidence will grow and together we will celebrate your creative potential as a healer.

There are 6 days of training taking place over a 6 month period with homeplay and practical healing sessions on each day to integrate your healing and learning.  The sessions will cover the following...

Session 1: In this session you will cover the basics of energy work and shamanic journeying.  You will go on a journey to meet with your Power Animal in the Lower World and there you will learn about your animals message and medicine and begin the process of bonding with your Animals energies.

Session 2: In this session you will cover the building and holding of sacred space with practical exercises to explore this deeply.  Also you will be looking at energetic blockages, learning how to see and remove them safely and looking at the concept of healing the self through mediation.

Session 3: In this session you will be journeying to meet your Spirit Guides in the Upper World, bringing back a deeper connection to them and calling upon them to aid you in healing.  Also you will be creating and leading your own healing meditation.

Session 4: In this session you will be journeying to meet your Psychic Guide who will aid you in becoming aware of the energy or light body and the psychic information this will reveal to you.  You will also be looking at the many ways that information in healing can be given and translated.

Session 5: In this session you will be considering different energy sources, looking at the elements and how they might be used in healing and meditating on the source of yourself and creation.

Session 6: In this our final session you will be looking at creativity through symbolism, sound and mantra, creating your very own mantra and symbol for healing.

You need to be aware that this course may take you to deeper levels of personal experience and healing than you have seen before.  This course is not suitable for complete beginners to energy work as some of the techniques used are very intensive.

Please call Alison on 042 020 8879 or email me, alison@shamanicspirit.com.au for more information on this or any other courses you might be interested in.

Hi Lemons,

Attached is the flier with all the details of our upcoming camp with Lemon Zest and Rainbow Babies.  If you are planning on coming and haven't let me know then please do so as I need to give Turon Gates an idea of numbers soon.

The fee is $24 per car per night, plus $6 per dog, and you pay the caretaker at the site.  All the information about the camp facilities are attached, and you can get more information or a map on the Turon Gates website.  Please remember that only socialised, friendly and well behaved dogs are welcome, as there will be children and small dogs. Although there are no organised walks, there are walking tracks around the property, as well as horseriding, relaxing, eating.......

Cheers

Macarthur Advertiser- anti lesbian behaviour- your support needed

We need to bombard the Macarthur Advertiser with letters

Many of you may have seen the article that the Macarthur Advertiser published two weeks ago advertising the "My Fair Lemon" lesbian fair at WILMA Women's Health Centre.  While this article might have looked like the newspaper was supporting our community event, this so-called support was undermined by the headline that ran above the article - the online version read "Men!  Keep Out of Lesbian Event".  The print version read "Men!  Please Keep Away".  Aside from the fact that this headline would catch the eye of men flicking through the paper rather than the intended audience of women, it was deliberately provocative and offensive to men.  It also put the safety of women attending the fair in danger by publishing the full address of the event under the inflamatory headline.

I wrote a letter to the editor complaining about the headline (as did several others), but my letter was not published.  Instead, the newspaper published another homophobic rant by Judith Bond under the heading "Sold a Lemon", in which she once again called lesbians all manner of names and ranted on about how homsexuality is unnatural and wrong etc etc.

I urge you all to write a letter to the Macarthur Advertiser BEFORE PUBLICATION ON WEDNESDAY THIS WEEK either in response to Judith's letter, or condemning the paper for continuing to publish her rants.  Really, the fact that they continue to publish this rot is nothing short of vilification.

I submitted a short letter this morning as follows:

I found Judith Bond's negative definitions of 'lemon' last week rather queer.  Lemons are natural fruits made by Judith's Creator God that are healthy, refreshing, zesty, and tasty.  There's nothing unnatural about same-sex relationships.  What is unnatural is Judith's self-righteous, hateful homophobia and it's about time this newspaper stopped publishing her offensive rants

I urge all of you to write to the Advertiser so that they get the message that there are a lot of us out here who are offended by their continued homophobia.

Regards

Mez

For those of you who are interested, my letter to the Advertiser last week read as follows:

I am writing to express my concern at what disappointingly appears to be discriminatory and homophobic reporting by your newspaper.

I am a local lesbian involved in the "My Fair Lemon" event that will take place on Sunday 25 October at the WILMA Women's Health Centre.  I had been looking forward to the event, however, after reading the Advertiser's article on the event in yesterday's paper I am now not only embarrassed by the way lesbians in the local area have been portrayed as anti-men, but also concerned for my safety and the safety of other women who will be attending.

I fail to understand why the offensive and deliberately provocative headlines 'Men! Keep Out of Lesbian Event!', as appeared on the website, and 'Men! Please keep out of it!', as appeared in the print version, were necessary.  WILMA Women's Health Centre, as a women-only safe space, prohibits men from entering its premises at all times, not just when hosting lesbian-friendly events.  Why then, did the Advertiser deem it necessary to emphasise the prohibition on men on the premises when the occasion is a lesbian event?  The Advertiser's use of these headlines is offensive in that it carries the implication that lesbians are aggressive, man-hating monsters, an inaccurate and unfair stereotype that unfortunately has plagued lesbians for many years.  Homophobic and socially irresponsible media portrays such as the Advertiser's headlines perpetuates this ridiculous myth and continues to create barriers for lesbians becoming accepted as ordinary women within our communities.  Of even more concern is the potential for such reporting to incite ill-informed backlash that could well end in harassment and violence.  Compromising the safety of women in the community for the sake of a sensationalist headline is never acceptable.

RECLAIM THE NIGHT

Crown Street Mall Amphitheatre

END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN in the home, in the street, in war and in the workplace

DECRIMINALISE ABORTION

A rally to protest domestic violence, sexual abuse, and all forms of violence against women.

The economic crisis, war and environmental destruction have been bad for all but worse for women. Domestic violence and sexual violence are on the increase and it is still the case that women often don't feel safe at home, at work or in the street! Rape and other violence against women are still used as weapons of war.

A rally for women concerned about these issues. Men are encouraged to attend in support.

FW: Parramatta Pride Picnic 11th Oct

PICNIC TAKES PRIDE OF PLACE IN PARRAMATTA

WHAT:         Parramatta Pride Picnic
WHEN:         Parramatta Park, Site 23
WHERE:       Sunday 11 October 2009, 11:00am to 4:00pm
COST:          FREE

The biggest annual event for Western Sydney's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community – the Parramatta Pride Picnic – is set to take place next month.

Organisers are expecting over 500 people to attend the event which will be held in Parramatta Park (Site 23) on Sunday 11 October from 11:00am to 4:00pm.

The picnic is being presented by the Parramatta City Council in partnership with the Parramatta Queer Forum, a group of GLBT community organisations including ACON – Australia's largest GLBT health and HIV/AIDS organisation – Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), the Western Suburbs Haven, and the Cumberland Women's Health Centre.

ACON's Western Sydney Liaison Officer Matt Vaughn says the picnic is an opportunity for GLBT locals as well as their families and friends to get together, have fun and find out about available services.

"The day is really about getting out there and meeting other people," Mr Vaughn says. "GLBT and HIV positive people living in the Western Sydney region can often experience a sense of social isolation and a lack of attachment to the broader GLBT community and this can have a significant impact on their health and wellbeing.

"The Parramatta Pride Picnic provides an opportunity to meet other people and families, make new friends and most importantly just have a really fun day out in the middle of Parramatta.

"There'll be lots of activities for the kids like story telling, face painting and kite making. The Western Suburbs Haven will be there again this year cooking the barbeque for those people who don't want to bring a picnic basket. All the money from the barbeque goes back to the Western Suburbs Haven which supports people with HIV in Western Sydney.

"There'll also be a range of community information stalls with people from various organisations which provide services for the GLBT community in Western Sydney. Visitors will be able to talk to workers from each organisation as well as find out more about local support and social groups.

"It's great to see everyone come along with their children, friends and family members. They get a nice spot in the sun, throw out a rug, get out the picnic basket and enjoy the day.

Missing Pieces – A Theatre Piece

Missing Pieces – A Theatre Piece; on the Challenges of Conforming to Society’s Norms and Upholding Traditional Family Values.

DamShel Productions launches Missing Pieces, a new theatre piece, for 12 performances only from 28th October 2009 at the Tap Gallery, Darlinghurst, NSW.

Shelley Wall was inspired to write and direct Missing Pieces to explore gay and lesbian themes within the Australian theatre arena.

Missing Pieces is a contemporary drama about two married couples, exposing the frailties of their relationships and the secrets they share and hide from each other. The play explores sexual identity, society conformity, family responsibility vs. personal freedom, infidelity and addresses the emotionally provocative issues of domestic violence and abuse in this country. This theatrical production is confronting in parts and not necessarily for the faint hearted.

Missing Pieces features Naomi Parszos as Jackie a complex woman guarding a secret and despite her efforts to fight this darkness and protect the one she loves, it controls her life; Anna Grace Guy as Carla who struggles with the reality and responsibilities of marriage and family versus her own happiness; Daniel Hunter as Brett a grounded family man yet despite his outward wholesome goodness there is a darker side to him that he keeps hidden away from the people he loves; and Danny Rey-Conde as Jed who at first glance appears as a loveable, charismatic character, however, he is driven by primal instincts to control those around him.

Shelley Wall was moved to write Missing Pieces and capture the struggles of her two friends who have successfully juggled their marriages and their affair for years without their husbands knowing. During discussions with them one day she asked: what would happen if one of your husbands did find out? From that single question the play was born.

Shelley Wall and Damian Kershaw formed DamShel Productions to produce their own and new Australian plays that are edgy and prepared to push the boundaries of contemporary theatre productions.

Missing Pieces will be performed at the Tap Gallery, 278 Palmer Street, Darlinghurst. The season runs from 28/10/09 to 8/11/09. Wednesday to Saturday 7:30pm. Saturday / Sunday matinee 3pm. Tickets $30 Full / $25 Concession through MCA Tix. Bookings 1300 308 776 or http://www.mca-tix.com.au.
